Canadian Retail Sales Rebound in August, Snapping July Slump

Canada’s retail sector staged a strong recovery in August 2026, with sales rising 1.3% month-over-month, reversing the previous month’s decline. The fresh data, updated on 24 September 2026, show a clear turnaround from July’s 0.7% contraction.

The figures indicate that, on a month-over-month basis, retailers managed to regain lost ground after July 2026, when sales fell 0.7% compared with June. In August, the 1.3% increase points to a renewed willingness among consumers to spend, offering a more optimistic signal for short-term domestic demand.

With the “actual” August result measured against July and the “previous” figure reflecting July’s change versus June, the data suggest that the weakness seen earlier in the summer may have been temporary. Market participants will now be watching upcoming releases closely to see whether August’s momentum can be sustained into the autumn.
