Mexico Trade Surplus Falls Short of Forecast

Mexico’s trade balance recorded a surplus of $605 million in August 2026, up from $209 million in the same month a year earlier but significantly below market expectations of a $1.4 billion surplus.

Total merchandise exports amounted to $78.01 billion, a 40.4% increase year over year. Exports of manufactured goods climbed 42.6%, driven mainly by:

  • Electrical and electronic equipment and appliances (+122.3%)
  • Mining and metallurgical products (+50.4%)
  • Plastic and rubber products (+10.6%)
  • Food, beverages, and tobacco (+10.0%)
  • Specialized machinery and equipment for various industries (+7.2%)

By contrast, agricultural and fishing exports declined 1.6%, and oil exports fell 2.8%.

Merchandise imports reached $77.40 billion. Within this total, imports of consumer goods rose 8.9%, purchases of intermediate goods surged 41.9%, and imports of capital goods increased 6.9%.

Over the first eight months of 2026, Mexico’s trade balance posted a cumulative surplus of $9.86 billion.
