Japanese Yields Slip on Solid Bond Sale

Japan’s 10-year government bond yield fell to around 3.08% on Wednesday, retreating from 30-year highs as strong demand at this week’s government debt auctions helped calm market nerves.

Auctions for 2-year and 40-year Japanese government bonds drew stronger-than-expected interest, with higher yields making the securities more attractive to investors. The latest 40-year bond sale saw its strongest demand since 2020, while the 2-year auction also posted a higher bid level than its 12-month average.

This robust demand came despite expectations that the Bank of Japan will continue lifting interest rates to rein in persistent inflation. Earlier this week, a former BOJ official indicated the central bank could raise its benchmark rate for a second straight meeting in October.

Japanese yields were further pressured lower by a sharp drop in oil prices, driven by signs of improving energy flows from the Middle East, which helped ease inflation concerns.
