German Import Price Inflation Accelerates to 8.3% in August, Up from 6.8% in July

Germany’s import prices rose at a faster pace in August 2026, underscoring mounting cost pressures for Europe’s largest economy. The German Import Price Index increased 8.3% year-over-year in August, compared with a 6.8% annual rise in July, according to data updated on 30 September 2026.

The figures are calculated on a year-over-year basis, meaning August 2026 prices are compared with those of August 2025, while the previous reading compared July 2026 with July 2025. The acceleration from July to August signals that imported goods and inputs are becoming more expensive at an increasing rate, which can feed through into producer and consumer prices over time.

The stronger annual gain in August suggests that external cost pressures facing German businesses, particularly those reliant on foreign raw materials and intermediate goods, continued to build as the summer progressed. Market participants will be watching upcoming data to assess whether this marks the start of a more persistent uptrend in import price inflation.
