Japan’s Service-Sector Sentiment Climbs as Tankan Non-Manufacturers Index Rises to 30 in Q3

Japan’s large non-manufacturing companies reported stronger business sentiment in the third quarter of 2026, with the Tankan Large Non-Manufacturers Diffusion Index edging up to 30, from 28 in the previous quarter. The latest reading, covering the third quarter and updated on 30 September 2026, points to a further improvement in confidence across Japan’s service-oriented industries.

The rise from the second quarter 2026 level suggests that major firms in sectors such as retail, transportation, and other services generally see business conditions as more favorable than three months earlier. While the increase is modest, moving the index from 28 to 30 indicates a broadening share of companies reporting positive rather than negative conditions.

Investors and policymakers often track this segment of the Tankan survey closely, as non-manufacturing activity accounts for a large share of Japan’s domestic economy. The stronger third-quarter reading could be interpreted as a sign of gradually improving demand in the services sector as the country moves through the second half of 2026.
