Malaysia’s Manufacturing PMI Slips Below Expansion Threshold in September

Malaysia’s manufacturing sector showed signs of softening in September 2026, with the Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) edging down to 49.90 from 50.20 in August. The latest reading, updated on 1 October 2026, marks a move just below the 50.0 threshold that separates expansion from contraction in the sector.

On a month-over-month basis, the September figure indicates a marginal deterioration in manufacturing conditions compared with August, when the PMI had still signaled slight expansion. The August 2026 reading of 50.20 had itself represented an improvement over the previous month, but the dip in September points to a modest loss of momentum.

The month-over-month comparison framework shows that while manufacturing activity was expanding—albeit weakly—in August, it transitioned into marginal contraction in September. The data will be closely watched for signs of whether this softening is temporary or the start of a more pronounced slowdown in Malaysia’s industrial sector.
