TSX Closes Flat as Tech Gains Offset Broader Losses

The S&P/TSX Composite Index finished essentially unchanged at 35,518 on Monday, as strength in technology shares offset weakness in energy and financials. Tech stocks climbed in step with the AI-driven rally on Wall Street, led by a 5.7% gain in Shopify. Global bond yields remained near multi-year highs amid worries over stubborn, energy-related inflation and mounting fiscal risks. Credit-sensitive financials retreated, with RBC and TD Bank each down 0.5%, BMO off 0.7%, and Scotiabank lower by 0.9%. Energy names also declined as the recent oil rally lost momentum. Suncor (-1.2%) agreed to sell stakes in three offshore oil assets to Ithaca, while Cenovus (-3%) announced a cash-and-stock acquisition of Athabasca Oil. Mining stocks were mostly weaker as gold prices trimmed earlier gains, with Barrick slipping 0.6%.
