Rupiah Gains Capped by Dollar Strength, External Risks

The Indonesian rupiah traded around IDR 17,910 per U.S. dollar on Tuesday, inching higher from the previous session as investors looked ahead to key domestic data due later in the week, including September foreign exchange reserves, consumer sentiment, and August retail sales. On the fiscal side, conditions through August remained underpinned by revenue growth, even as reports suggested ongoing delays in tax restitutions. Still, gains in the rupiah were constrained by Indonesia’s fragile external position, with elevated imports and higher energy costs weighing on the balance of payments amid continued geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. Inflation is also expected to become more difficult to manage in the coming months, as food prices remain high following El Niño–related supply disruptions. Externally, the U.S. dollar index hovered near an 18‑month peak, supported by elevated U.S. Treasury yields and firmer oil prices. At the same time, euro weakness—driven by political and fiscal concerns in the eurozone—further bolstered demand for the greenback, limiting additional upside for the rupiah.
