Mexico Car Exports Post Sharp Drop

Mexico’s vehicle exports dropped 11.8% year over year to 277,369 units in September 2026, reversing a 1.3% increase recorded in August. The steepest decline in export volumes was at Mercedes‑Benz, where shipments fell 100%, followed by Nissan (‑33%) and Stellantis (‑20.4%).

The country’s automotive sector continues to face headwinds from uncertainty over US trade policy, as the United States remains the primary destination for Mexican vehicle exports. The Trump administration has imposed tariffs on several key trading partners, and the United States declined to renew the USMCA in its existing form during the agreement’s 2026 joint review. The pact technically remains in force while outstanding issues are resolved or it is formally terminated, and Washington and Mexico City continue bilateral negotiations, including talks focused on the auto industry.

Export volumes also declined for a number of other major manufacturers: Ford Motor (‑13.2%), Honda (‑17.7%), Acura (‑9.9%), Audi (‑18.6%), Toyota (‑6.2%) and Volkswagen (‑3.5%).
