Slovakia Records Trade Deficit in August

Slovakia recorded a trade deficit of EUR 125 million in August 2026, reversing a surplus of EUR 2.3 million in the same month a year earlier. This was the first deficit after six consecutive months of trade surpluses, as import growth outpaced exports.

Imports increased by 7% to EUR 8,414 million, driven mainly by higher inflows of mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials, as well as stronger purchases of machinery and transport equipment. Imports from EU member states rose by more than 11%, while those from non‑EU countries inched up by 0.1%.

Exports climbed 5.4% to EUR 8,289.1 million, supported by higher sales of manufactured goods classified chiefly by material and a rise in mineral fuels and related materials. Exports to the EU grew by more than 8%, whereas shipments to non‑EU markets declined by 6%.

Over the January–August 2026 period, Slovakia’s trade surplus amounted to EUR 1,538.1 million, compared with EUR 1,460.7 million in the same period of 2025.
