India’s September CPI Jumps to 5.54% YoY, Breaking Out of August’s Sub-5% Range

India’s consumer inflation accelerated in September 2026, with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rising 5.54% year-over-year, up from 4.82% in August 2026. The latest data, updated on 12 October 2026, show price pressures firming again after briefly easing below the 5% mark in the previous month.

Both readings are calculated on a year-over-year basis, comparing each month with the same month a year earlier. While August’s 4.82% figure pointed to some moderation in inflation at that time, the September print at 5.54% signals a renewed pickup in price growth as the third quarter draws to a close.

The move from 4.82% to 5.54% YoY will likely refocus attention on the inflation trajectory in Asia’s third-largest economy, as investors and analysts reassess how persistent price pressures may shape India’s macroeconomic outlook going into the final months of 2026.
