Finland Current Account Shifts to Deficit

Finland’s current account posted a EUR 890 million deficit in August 2026, reversing from a EUR 319 million surplus in the same month a year earlier. The deterioration was mainly due to a shift in the primary income balance, which moved to a EUR 566 million deficit from a EUR 447 million surplus. At the same time, the secondary income deficit widened to EUR 174 million from EUR 124 million.

The goods trade surplus narrowed slightly to EUR 143 million from EUR 168 million a year earlier. Goods exports increased by 24% year-on-year to EUR 7.2 billion, but imports rose at a faster pace of 26% to EUR 7.1 billion. By contrast, the services deficit narrowed to EUR 292 million from EUR 171 million.

On a 12‑month moving average basis, the current account remained in deficit, at EUR 700 million. Separately, net capital outflows from Finland totaled EUR 5.8 billion, driven mainly by EUR 4.9 billion in outflows in other investments.
