Japanese Shares Rise as Tech Selloff Eases

The Nikkei 225 Index climbed more than 1% to above 65,000 on Friday, retracing part of the previous session’s steep losses as selling pressure on technology shares eased and investors reassessed the outlook for artificial intelligence. The rebound followed comments from Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, who defended the financial position of AI computing provider CoreWeave Inc. amid mounting concerns over the balance sheets of companies involved in the AI buildout.

Market participants also looked ahead to remarks from Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh, who was scheduled to join International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva for a fireside chat in Bangkok.

Among notable tech gainers were Kioxia and Advantest, each up 0.7%, and Lasertec, which rose 3%. Financials and consumer names also advanced, with Mitsubishi UFJ gaining 2% and Toyota Motor rising 2.1%. Despite Friday’s rebound, the Nikkei remained on track to log a weekly decline of more than 5%.
