The TAIEX, Taiwan’s benchmark stock index, fell 290 points, or 0.6%, to close at 46,822 on Monday, wiping out gains from the previous session and marking its lowest level since September 17. The downturn followed losses on Wall Street on Friday, driven by a tech sell-off and mounting concerns over AI-related investments. Most sectors finished in negative territory, including electronic technology, which slipped 0.5% after rising 0.2% on Friday. TSMC, the world’s largest contract chipmaker and a heavyweight that represents more than 40% of the market’s total value, extended its decline, dropping 1.0% after a 0.2% loss in the prior session. MediaTek retreated 1.3%, Hon Hai Precision fell 2.1%, and ASE Technology declined 1.5%. The financial sector slid 0.9%, dragged down primarily by Fubon Financial Holding (-1.9%) and Cathay Financial Holdings (-2.2%). Still, the market’s losses were partly capped by moderating oil prices, waning expectations of further Fed rate hikes, and robust Chinese economic data, with Q3 GDP growth beating forecasts.
