The Baltic Exchange’s dry bulk freight index, which tracks charter rates for vessels transporting dry bulk commodities, rose for a second consecutive session on Tuesday, gaining about 1.9% to reach a near one-week high of 2,593 points. The increase was largely driven by strength in the larger vessel segment.
The capesize index, covering ships that typically transport 150,000-ton cargoes such as iron ore and coal, also advanced for a second day, climbing 4.7% to 3,522 points. In contrast, the supramax index was unchanged at 1,868 points, while the panamax index—tracking vessels that usually carry 60,000 to 70,000 tons of coal or grain—edged down 1.7% to 2,247 points.
