The Hang Seng Index was little changed around 23,043 on Wednesday, as support from an overnight rally on Wall Street was offset by pressure from rising US Treasury yields, a stronger US dollar, and waning mainland buying interest. The Nasdaq rose 1.18% ahead of earnings reports from major US technology firms and the Federal Reserve’s policy decision.
On the mainland, A-shares continued to trade at a roughly 33% premium to their Hong Kong-listed counterparts, underscoring the impact of Beijing’s market-support measures and a growing investor tilt toward onshore equities. Mainland investors have logged about HK$20 billion in net sales of Hong Kong stocks so far this month, potentially removing a key source of support for the local market.
Investors were also awaiting the release of Hong Kong’s September trade data later in the day. Among notable movers, Genscript Biotech climbed 8.67%, Kingboard Laminates advanced 6.77%, Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp. rose 4.10%, and Z.AI gained 3.54%. In contrast, AIA Group fell 2.90%, while Pop Mart slipped 1.59%.
