German Consumer Mood Weakest in 6 Months

Germany's GfK Consumer Climate Indicator slipped to -30.8 heading into November 2026, down slightly from -30.6 in October and just above market expectations of -30.9. The index fell to its weakest level since May and remained sharply lower than the -24.1 recorded a year earlier.

Persistent concerns about household finances and inflation continued to dampen spending intentions, even as overall economic sentiment improved. Income expectations declined to -15.7 from -15.0, while willingness to buy weakened further, falling to -11.9 from -10.8. At the same time, price expectations moved deeper into positive territory, indicating renewed inflation worries after Germany’s inflation rate climbed to 3.3% in September, its highest level since December 2023.

In contrast, economic expectations improved notably, rising to 2.1 from -3.4 and turning positive for the first time since the outbreak of the Iran War, extending their recovery for a sixth consecutive month. Willingness to save eased to 17.2 from 21.5, though it remained relatively high.
