Macau’s trade deficit widened to MOP 12.3 billion in September 2026, up from MOP 10.1 billion a year earlier, as import growth outpaced that of exports. Imports jumped 21.7% year-on-year to MOP 13.6 billion, driven mainly by surging purchases of gold jewellery and mobile phones, which increased by 48.9% and 32.5%, respectively. Hong Kong remained Macau’s leading source of imports, with shipments rising 24%, followed by Mainland China with a 17.5% increase.
Exports also strengthened, climbing 19.1% to MOP 1.3 billion. The expansion was supported by higher shipments of miscellaneous manufactured articles (up 20.5%), machinery and transport equipment (46.2%), jewellery (85.1%), and machines and mechanical appliances, including parts and accessories (24.9%). By destination, exports to Hong Kong grew 12.4%, while exports to Mainland China soared 142.8%.
Over the first nine months of the year, from January to September, Macau posted a cumulative trade deficit of MOP 98.3 billion.
