FX.co ★ Romanian Retail Sales Drop 2.6% in September

Romania’s retail sales dropped 2.6% year-on-year in September 2026, deepening from a revised 0.2% decline in August. The contraction was broad-based, with all major categories recording decreases: sales of non-food products fell 2.0% (after a 0.1% rise in August), food, beverages and tobacco were down 2.2% (vs a 2.0% drop previously), and sales of automotive fuel in specialized stores declined 3.5% (vs a 1.1% decrease in August). On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, retail trade contracted 1.3%, reversing a downwardly revised 2.1% gain in the prior month. Over the first nine months of the year, retail sales were down 4.6% compared with the same period a year earlier.
