BRL Under Pressure on Narrowing US-Brazil Rate Differential Bets

The Brazilian real weakened to around 5.53 per USD in November, as stronger-than-expected US labor market data bolstered the dollar against a basket of currencies. Nonfarm payrolls rose by 165,000 last month, beating all forecasts, while the unemployment rate edged lower. These robust figures reinforced expectations that the Federal Reserve will keep monetary policy in restrictive territory. A narrowing interest-rate differential between Brazil and the US tends to weigh on the real by reducing the appeal of carry trades.

At the same time, the Brazilian Central Bank (BCB) kept the Selic rate unchanged at 13.75%, interrupting its easing cycle. The decision underscored a challenging macroeconomic backdrop characterized by slower growth, higher inflation, and heightened fiscal uncertainty following President Lula’s reelection. Labor market indicators in Brazil also signaled cooling activity: the economy generated 121,305 formal jobs in September, well below market expectations of 171,000.
