ECB introduces new 10-euro banknote

The new 10-euro banknote issued by the European Central Bank has gone into circulation. The note features Europa, a figure from Greek mythology. According to a legend, Zeus in a disguise of a bull stole her. The new Europa series €10 note is the continuation of the Europa series €5. Its portrait is copied from an ancient wine vessel. If turned to light, it can be seen in a hologram placed on a special tape that crosses the right edge of the banknote. The hologram and watermark forming the figure are done to help fight counterfeits. What’s more, the banknote changes color when tilted from emerald green to dark blue.
At an official presentation of the banknote, the ECB said the new €10 banknote will be ‘very easy to check’. The introduction of the new note was done after a large-scale modernization of money printing machines. The regulator did not say about its plans to withdraw the old notes. This means they will be taken out of circulation when worn and replaced with the new ones. The new security measures are taken to combat counterfeiting. A total of 317,000 counterfeit euro banknotes were withdrawn from circulation in the first half of 2013. The central bank has plans afoot to replace the banknotes of all denominations: €20, €50, €100, €200, and €500.
