UK's Burnham rejects funding for Trump's agenda

UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham has expressed his readiness to openly confront US President Donald Trump in defense of British national interests. His statements come amid growing economic damage to the United Kingdom resulting from the escalation of the American conflict with Iran.

In his first major interview with BBC following his inauguration, Burnham described his introductory conversation with the White House leader as "really warm" and a "good exchange." However, the British prime minister twice refrained from directly answering whether he trusts the American president. "The world is changing," Burnham concluded, adding that London does not pledge to blindly follow the US foreign policy agenda.

A key factor behind cooling relations is the macroeconomic impact of Middle Eastern tensions. According to Burnham, the conflict with Iran has sparked a surge in oil prices, which immediately heightened inflation risks in the UK and led to an increase in government borrowing costs in the bond market.

The desire to distance itself from Washington faces internal fiscal challenges. Amid discussions about national security, Burnham declined to confirm a commitment to increase the UK's defense spending to 3% of GDP by 2030. This target remains a contentious political issue: previous disagreements over the timeline for achieving it had led to the resignation of John Healey as defense minister in the cabinet of Keir Starmer.

Burnham stressed that the Cabinet's priority will be to fully fund current defense programs within existing limits. Any expansion of the military budget, which will be discussed at year-end, will encounter stiff competition from domestic social commitments amid extremely limited fiscal space.

The prime minister also ruled out the possibility of holding early parliamentary elections, which are scheduled for 2029. He stated that the government will focus on stabilizing the economy and implementing its declared agenda rather than seeking a new electoral mandate.
