China to suppress Hong Kong protests

A massive uprising has engulfed Hong Kong. A large-scale protest campaign was christened “Umbrella Revolution”. Things started from the protest against the decision of the Chinese government to approve Hong Kong candidates for elections in 2017. Hong Kong officially came out of the British jurisdiction and moved under China’s control. At that time, the region gained the guarantee of autonomy with the “one country, two systems” policy. The agreement is valid up to 2047, but the Chinese government strives to take over the election process and is likely to be planning the “seizure” of power in Hong Kong. A peaceful protest organized mostly by students is faced powerful government machine of dictatorship and propaganda.
“President Xi Jinping of China has established himself as an autocratic leader, so there is no telling how far he would go if the pro-democracy forces keep standing their ground. He has shown no mercy against Uighur separatists in Xinjiang, and he has made sure that government censors tightened controls on Instagram and other Internet programs in Hong Kong. It is hard not to fear a repeat of the bloody crackdown 25 years ago against protesters in Tiananmen Square that killed hundreds,” a local newspaper said.
China has been trying to harness Hong Kong for a long time and gradually reducing its dependence from it as a financial center. Earlier, it was extremely important for the country’s economy. Analysts at Julius Baer provide data for 1997, when Hong Kong's GDP as a percentage of the Mainland Chinese GDP was 18%. Today, the share of Hong Kong in the Chinese economy is only 3%. So in case the protests take long, the citizens of Hong Kong are going to suffer.
