Russian authorities ban American poultry

As if the officials were concerned about obesity among the Russians, they cut supplies of poultry and final meat products. With the approach of winter holidays, at the beginning of December, the Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance (Rosselkhoznadzor) published a document that prohibits imports of the U.S. poultry to the Russian territory. “In order to ensure safety of poultry products exported into the Russian market the Rosselkhoznadzor imposes temporary restrictions on export of poultry meat and poultry products as well as RTE poultry meat products from US plants into the Russian Federation from December 5, 2014”, the document on the official website reads. This measure is determined as temporary, however, the time constraints of the restriction is not stated, so, it is difficult to define the ban removal date. Repeatedly, the Russian veterinary services have announced the detection of harmful substances including tetracyclines in poultry imported from the U.S. However, the American side has not provided any documents on removal of the established sanitary norms' violations yet. It is noteworthy that during the cooperation the Russian officials have had multiple complaints against the product safety control at the US poultry processing plants. At present time, the American authorities implement a structural reform in this sphere. The official representatives of the Rosselkhoznadzor has already announced that future changes may cause a considerable decrease in safety of the American poultry production. So, the Russian officials are also concerned about Americans suffering from connivance of the local veterinary service.
