Angela Merkel expressed her attitude to the UK’s shaky position. According to the German Chancellor, the fact that the Great Britain is an “important part and active member of the EU” plays a significant role for the organization.
“We are prepared to talk about British wishes but we must always bear in mind that other countries have different wishes and we must find a fair compromise.” - Ms Merkel clarified.
Chancellor’s response followed the British Prime Minister David Cameron’s promise to hold a referendum regarding the UK’s membership of the EU. As Cameron explained, the main reason for in-out referendum is lack of necessary, from the UK authorities’ perspective, reforms in the single currency block.
