Angela Merkel wins German election

Angela Merkel's conservative Christian Union (CDU/CSU) bloc won Germany's general election. According to the Central Election Committee of Germany, Merkel’s party gained majority in 299 constituencies, winning 33% of the vote.

The Social Democrats (SPD) came in a distant second, with 20.5%, which is a post-war record low score. According to the leader of the movement Martin Schulz, the reason for the defeat was that the SPD could not reach their traditional voter.

Far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) won 12.6% of the vote, coming in third place and entering parliament for the first time.

Parties with over 5% of the vote will also get seats in parliament. They are the Free Democratic Party (10.7%), the Left Party (9.2%), Alliance 90/The Greens (8.9%).
