The four winners of the first interplanetary reality show ever will become first space colonizers and spend the rest of their lives on Mars. The casting has already begun!
The goal of this colossal project named Mars One is to organize first manned one-way expedition. According to the plan developed by the Mars One team, the landing on Mars is planned on April 22, 2023. The realization of the project will consist of several stages: picking and training future colonists, sending technical equipment and materials for setting up the first human settlement and finally bringing participants to Mars.
At the press conference in Holland, where its headquarters are situated, Mars One founder Bas Lansdorp said that the humanity has enough experience and knowledge to land on Mars. “We assume that there will be delays, luck of funds, failures, but in the end we’ll succeed”, - says Lansdorp.
The preliminary casting results are going to be announced in July 2013. You can apply for participation with one-minute presenting video. The project organizers are planning to accept about 1 million applications just to limit the number of applicants. The cost of the application submission is $25. This money will go to the financing budget of the casting stage. Before the official start of the registration, the number of application videos has been 10,000.
The first flight will cost 6 billion dollars. The realization of the broadcasting rights of this reality show will bring a part of this money. The shooting will be started at the stage of casting.
Four project astronauts will become first space colonists and will spend the rest of their lives in the Martian settlement. The casting is going to be an unprecedented reality show. The 24 candidates, whose named will be announced in July, 2015, will be divided into 4 groups for full-time training program. The training stage will take 7 years.
Meanwhile, the non-commercial fund of the first space tourist Dennis Tito intends to send a married couple to the Red Planet. But unlike the Mars One project, this expedition will come back to Earth.
On the way to Mars the participants will face some difficulties such as living on 17 square meters and complete isolation for one year and a half. Despite that, the organizers believe that space colonists will significantly contribute to science and interplanetary relationships development.
