Merkel's conservatives approve coalition deal with SPD

Angela Merkel's Christian Democrats (CDU) approved the coalition deal with the center-left Social Democrats (SPD). The move brings closer Merkel's fourth term as well as an end to a political uncertainty in the country.

On March 4, results of a binding postal vote by members of the center-left SPD will be announced and they are not that predictable.

“Now I can only say to the SPD that I hope many members feel the same responsibility for giving Germany a good government,” Merkel said.

Merkel’s party voted ‘for’ or ‘against’ the coalition with the SPD during an extraordinary party congress in Berlin.

The vote followed Merkel’s announcement of her pick for a new, younger cabinet intended to resolve contradictions about how to respond to the Alternative for Germany (AfD).
