UK officially passes its EU withdrawal bill

A bill enacting Britain’s decision to leave the European Union has become law after it had received royal assent from Queen Elizabeth II, the House of Commons speaker announced.

On June 20, 2018, the House of Lords passed the EU withdrawal bill. The bill has undergone fierce debate in the Houses of Parliament. The government had a tough time getting the bill through parliament and was forced to concede some power to lawmakers over the final Brexit deal agreed with Brussels.

The procedure for Britain's withdrawal from the EU started on March 29, 2017, after eurosceptics won a majority of votes in a referendum a year earlier.

The UK is scheduled to officially depart from the European Union on March 29, 2019.
