On August 29, the British police arrested two people who were allegedly selling horsemeat as beef, Agence France-Presse reports.
The detainees, who were released on bail, are suspected of false accounting and fraud. No detailed information on the case was released.
Moreover, the police said about some searches that were carried out in houses and commercial organizations around Great Britain.
In May, Willy Selten, the owner of the meat wholesaler company of the same name was arrested in the Netherlands. The company’s interim director was detained as well. Two Dutch were accused of selling 300 tonnes of horsemeat labeled as beef. Another meat trader was arrested in early March in the Netherlands. Jan Fasen, the Draap Trading Ltd director, was obliged to pay a $50,000 fine and sentenced to the 6 months of prison for marketing horsemeat as beef.
Moreover, three British were detained due to the horsemeat scandal.
It burst in the United Kingdom and Ireland in January 2013, when the horse DNA was found in beef products. Later, this ingredient was discovered in meat products in more than ten EU countries.
It was said nothing on the health problems caused by such food. Nevertheless, the mislabeled products were withdrawn from supermarket shelves. Now the regulator started watching the meat consignments much more thoroughly.
Who is to blame has not been determined yet.
