The White House is trying to strike a balance between the protection of citizens’ health and the revival of the American economy. Advisors of the US President Donald Trump have split into two camps. Some of them advocate for a speedy economic restart, while others insist on maintaining quarantine measures. Each camp has solid arguments in its arsenal. The president leans towards the representatives of the first camp seeking the reopening of the country. However, he has not made a decision yet. “I think by June we're looking at numbers between 16 and 20%. The unemployment rate at that point will be something… that we haven’t seen since the 1930s,” says Kevin Hassett, senior economic adviser to President Trump. Meanwhile, lockdown supporters do not give up. “There’s no doubt in my mind that when you pull back mitigation, you’re going to start seeing cases crop up here and there,” said Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. “If you’re not able to handle them, you’re going to see another peak, a spike, and then you almost have to turn the clock back to go back to mitigation. If you follow the guidelines, there’s a continuity that’s safe, that’s prudent and that’s careful,” he said. Currently, Trump is facing a tough choice. However, despite all the hardship, he still manages to stay calm and make adequate decisions.
