The United States is one of the few, if not the only country, which openly accuses China of criminal negligence that has led to the outbreak of the coronavirus infection across the world. According to the American leader, the Chinese authorities have been deliberately concealing the scale of the tragedy and they still continue to distort important information. Donald Trump also commented on China’s intention to seize Hong Kong. The protests in this enclave temporarily fell off the radar due to the infamous quarantine. However, the problem remains. Hiding behind the issues of almost national security, mainland China is implementing laws that violate the "one country - two systems" principle. Nevertheless, the politicians of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China think differently. Li Zhanshu, the current Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, said that the party decided to create a mechanism to protect China’s sovereignty, security, and interests in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. This would further promote the development of the “one country - two systems” principle. This decision will allow China's officials to kill two birds with one stone. Firstly, China, by violating the agreement, will be able to establish even greater control over the autonomy. Secondly, the country will also continue to benefit from all the advantages of Hong Kong's special economic status.
