Donald Trump signs executive order aiming social media freedom

This is common knowledge that the US values freedom above all things. Besides, the US Constitution protects freedom of speech, religion, the press, etc. American citizens are aware of their rights and they are always ready to defend them if needed. Social media has always been a thorny issue for the US government. The owners of social media platforms are entitled to do everything they want without fear of taking responsibility for their actions. For this reason, the US government is trying to lower the power of large social media platforms e.g. Twitter, Facebook by reinterpreting a critical 1996 law that shields websites and tech companies from lawsuits. Moreover, in light of recent events such as alleged interference of foreign states in the US elections and incitement to mass riots from foreign accounts on social networks, the US government is planning to enforce legal restrictions on social media firms. "In a country that has long cherished the freedom of expression, we cannot allow a limited number of online platforms to hand-pick the speech that Americans may access and convey on the internet," the order reads. "The social network implicated in censorship or political action will no longer have protection from liability", Trump announced. The US President also accused Twitter of "stifling freedom of speech" after signs of fake news appeared under some of his posts.
