EU backs Twitter in battle with Trump

Recently, the EU officials have been engaged in the dispute between US President Donald Trump and social media giant Twitter. The European authorities supported Twitter’s decision to fact-check some tweets posted by the US leader. In particular, Twitter added fact-check links to some of the president’s tweets claiming he violated the platform’s policies against promoting violence. These actions triggered fury in the White House. Usually, Twitter removes similar publications posted by other users. However, controversial messages from world leaders are not deleted but are marked with a warning label instead. Still, Trump finds this kind of censorship unacceptable. Meanwhile, Vera Jourova, the European Commission vice-president for values and transparency, backed Twitter’s approach to content policies saying that censoring Trump’s messages was a good example of such transparency. "I support the Twitter reaction to tweets of President Trump," she said. "They did not delete it. We all can see it. They provided fact-checked information and promoted facts." Notably, this is not the first conflict between the American leader and the management of social networks. Thus, Facebook employees have recently criticized Mark Zuckerberg's decision not to remove Trump’s recent post.
