UN calls on member states to pay up debt

The global financial meltdown of 2008 still seems to be the reason for all economic troubles. It has been already 6 years since the economic collapse happened, however, the aftershocks hurt the economy up until now. The sources say that the majority of the countries failed to fulfill their financial obligations to the UN due to the crisis. According to official data, by the middle of the current month, 193 countries that are the members of the UN are obliged to pay the membership contribution. To be more precise, 33 countries have yet to pay up their dues, 101 states have partially contributed to the organization, and 59 members do not pay the fee at all. Complied with the official record, the outstanding assessments of the UN members cover the costs relating to peacekeeping operations, international tribunals, and renovation works at the UN’s Headquarters in New York. As of October 1, the debt swelled to the tune of $945 million dollars. The top state with unpaid assessments is the USA, then comes Brazil and Venezuela with $795 million, $75 million, and $22 million dollars respectively. Thus, 56 other members states owed UN $53 million dollars. Personal volumes of financing are set by the UN General Assembly which considers the level of economic development and the population of the UN member countries.
