Germans emptying store shelves amid possible lockdown

The coronavirus has decided to prolong his vacation in Germany. The country is again breaking anti-records as more and more people catch the deadly virus. The government is already considering to re-impose a nationwide lockdown. Therefore, local citizens who still vividly remember the first lockdown rushed to the stores to buy up the essential goods.

Funny enough, during the first wave of the pandemic, toilet paper became the most popular item around the world. It seems that now it has a rival. In Germany, people started a hunt for yeast. Demand for these two products has increased markedly in recent weeks. Experts at the Federal Statistical Office reported a sharp jump in sales of these goods. In mid-October, their sales soared by 90% compared to the figures before the pandemic. The data shows that consumers are afraid of a shortage and prefer to stock up on goods. Apart from the toilet paper and yeast, Germans also stored up flour and soap. However, the agency did not specify what kind of yeast Germans were looking for. Some economists joke that given the rising tension among people in Germany, there is a high probability that this is the yeast for brewing beer.

Nevertheless, Germans are not alone in their angst. People around the globe are now actively buying food, fearing that the second wave of coronavirus will damage global trade. The pandemic disrupted the supply chain between farms and enterprises, which previously led to empty shelves in stores globally.
