For the first time ever, the majority of current members of Congress are millionaires, according to a report from non-profit Center for Responsive Politics based on the analysis of disclosures filed by lawmakers.
Thus, at least 268 out of 534 members of Congress had an average net worth of $1 million or more in 2012. What’s more, the median net worth for lawmakers who were in Congress was $1,008,767 – an increase from the previous year’s figure of $966,000.
A median net worth of Congressional Republicans rose to $1 million in 2012 from $907,000 in the previous year. Meanwhile, congressional Democrats had a median net worth of $1.04 million, up from 2011 when it was $990,000. The Senate overall is much richer than the House of Representatives, with an average member worth of $2.7 million compared to the House’s relatively paltry $896,000.
The richest Congress member is Republican Darrell Issa, with an average net worth of over $464 million. Mark Warner comes next with $257.5 million followed by Jared Polis with $197.9 million.
Business interests of Congress members represent real estate, stock market, investments, and banks.
According to Credit Suisse’s annual Global Wealth Report, 41 percent of the 32 million millionaires in the world live in America. The U.S. created 1.7 million of the world's 1.8 million new millionaires in 2013.
