David Cameron to resign in case of failure of EU referendum

UK Prime Minister David Cameron has said he will stand down as prime minister if he cannot deliver an in-or-out referendum on the EU, The Daily Telegraph reports.
“This is not something I would ever barter away or give away. I would not be prime minister of a government unless we could carry out our pledge of an in-out referendum,” Cameron said during a conference call with his colleagues on the Conservative Party.
Cameron added that people are skeptical about his pledge to revise the relationship with the EU. Cameron’s Conservative Party mates have demanded that the premier to raise the issue of membership in the EU. If the Conservative Party wins the 2015 elections, the referendum would be held in 2017. At the same time, there are concerns that the initiative will be blocked if the Liberal Party takes the majority of votes. The referendum was already discussed in 2011. Then, the Liberal government's parliamentary majority declined to hold a referendum. Cameron did not support the initiative either, citing that it was not convenient time as Europe was in a deep crisis.
Great Britain joined the European Union in 1973. However, the country’s authorities have never wanted the UK to merge with the Union. The UK maintained its national currency and did not sign the Schengen Agreement.
