Australia Company Profits Jump 7.4% In Q4

The Australian Bureau of Statistics announced on Monday a significant rise in the operational profits of companies in Australia, seeing a seasonally adjusted 7.4 percent surge in the fourth quarter of 2023. This substantial increase has surpassed the predicted growth of 1.8 percent, which was anticipated following a 1.3 percent drop in the preceding three months. However, when compared to the previous year, there has been a 5.4 percent decrease in profits.

An analysis of wages and salaries during this period also revealed a 0.9 percent quarter-on-quarter and a notable 8 percent year-on-year increase. Not all sectors saw growth, with inventories lessening by 1.7 percent after witnessing an addition of 1.2 percent in the previous quarter. Year on year, inventories declined by 0.6 percent.

The manufacturing sector experienced a modest uplift in sales, increasing by 0.6 percent over the quarter and 1.5 percent over the year. Wholesale sales, however, saw a decline, shedding by 0.2 percent during the quarter and falling by 2.3 percent over the year.
