Google To Update Fitbit With Advanced Generative AI

Google Health held their annual event, The Check Up, at the Manhattan office where they provided comprehensive updates regarding numerous AI initiatives linked to the medical field. They're fine-tuning the Gemini model for medical use, and there is ongoing development of a Large Language Model (LLM). The aim is for this model to offer personalized health and wellness options through Fitbit's mobile application.

Google's upcoming Fitbit chatbot is designed to use cutting-edge generative AI to translate health data into implications users can act on. It employs the use of common language, which differs from the conventional health-tracking apps that deliver insights via graphs and charts. This utility's focus is to answer queries about Fitbit data in a conversational manner and to provide actionable insights that encourage users to learn more about their health data.

Premium Fitbit users will be able to access experimental AI features through Fitbit Labs initially for testing, and feedback, before these features are released to the wider public. This new move aligns with Google's AI Labs initiative permitting the users to evaluate and experiment with features under development. One significant feature is a chatbot which supports natural and conversational questions aimed at providing actionable guidance.

An advanced version of the Gemini model, the personal health LLM, will be introduced. It is being updated based on first-rate research case studies, concentrating on different health aspects gathered from Fitbit. Using various metrics such as changes in sleep patterns, exercise intensity and heart rate, the LLM aims to provide users with more tailored insights.

Karen DeSalvo, Google's Chief Health Officer, emphasised that AI won't be replacing doctors in the foreseeable future, but rather doctors who utilise AI will replace those who do not. The company is, as a result, working on a 'personal health' large language model. She also cautioned that the bot should not be seen as a source of medical advice. The Google's AI utilities are not intended to make medical decisions, a message that was underscored throughout the event.
