UK Consumer Sentiment Stagnates In March

In March, consumer confidence in the UK remained largely unchanged, however, for the first time since 2021, households expressed a positive outlook on their future financial situation, as per the survey results released by the market research group GfK on Friday.

In March, the consumer sentiment index remained at a steady -21, although it was projected to improve to -19.

The outlook for personal finances over the upcoming year increased to two points, up from zero. Similarly, the index reflecting past personal financial conditions exhibited a slight growth from -14 to -13.

However, the index tracking the past general economic conditions experienced a two-point decline to -45. Conversely, the expectations index saw a one-point increase to -23.

The major purchases index fell by two points to -27.

Joe Staton, GfK’s Client Strategy Director, welcomed the enhanced measure of personal finance given the fiscal hurdles faced by British citizens such as increased fuel costs, rising council taxes, and escalating utility bills leading to a decrease in wage or other income increases.

Staton posed the question, "Are we temporarily on pause, or are consumers about to press 'reverse'?" and underscored its importance in the context of the health of the economy as the UK approaches its next General Election.
