Kraft Heinz To Cut Carbon Emissions By 99% Across 10 U.S. Plants With $170 Mln DOE Investment

Kraft Heinz Co. has disclosed it is being considered by the US Department of Energy's Office of Clean Energy Demonstration for an award of up to $170 million. The financial award is meant to support clean energy projects in 10 of the company's US factories.

These factories manufacture various food products and there's potential for the projects' technology to be applied across a broad spectrum of food and beverage businesses.

Kraft Heinz intends to use the awarded funds to implement a variety of technologies. This includes heat pumps, electric heaters, electric boilers, anaerobic digestors, biogas boilers, and solar thermal and photovoltaic technologies. It also includes thermal energy storage.

This funding will contribute to a part of the "Delicious Decarbonization Through Integrated Electrification and Energy Storage" project. This, in turn, will assist the locations to reduce emissions by over 99% based on 2022 levels.

For Kraft Heinz, this represents a significant stride towards their goal of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The company also anticipates this project will yield around 500 construction jobs at the 10 plant sites.

As a continuation of its collaboration with the U.S Department of Energy, Kraft Heinz has joined the Better Climate Challenge and Renewable Thermal Collaborative. The purpose is to collaborate with various industries, share innovative ideas, and develop models that can expedite the process of decarbonization.
