Dow, a prominent multinational corporation, has unveiled its intentions to elevate its ethylene derivatives production in the US Gulf Coast. This project will specifically enhance the production of carbonate solvents, indispensable elements in creating lithium-ion batteries. The move is strategically designed to stimulate the growth of the domestic electric vehicle (EV) and energy storage industries, capitalizing on Dow's demonstrated prowess in promoting sustainable growth.
This venture is a continuation of Dow's ongoing expansion plans which include the impending global alkoxylation capacity expansions, set to kick off activities within the next two years in locations in the US Gulf Coast and Europe.
Moreover, Dow has revealed that it will be partnering with the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations to set up a large-scale carbonate solvents production facility in the U.S. Gulf Coast. This plant will be instrumental in lithium-ion battery production. The project enjoys support from various partners, including leading EV Original Equipment Manufacturers and electrolyte manufacturers.
The new facility will be designed to sequester over 90% of CO2 emissions from the production of ethylene oxide. The captured CO2 will then be utilized in the manufacture of carbonate solvents, a crucial component in electric vehicle propulsion and in consolidating the US power grid via energy storage.
In lithium-ion battery production, carbonate solvents serve as a vital ingredient in the electrolyte, improving overall battery performance and lifespan. This ultimately facilitates the advancement and adoption of electric vehicle technology. The production of this component will expand Dow's MobilityScience portfolio, aiming to address issues in the mobility industry such as decarbonization and enhancing EV performance.
In addition to these technical strides, Dow is determined to make socio-economic contributions. It plans to work alongside current and new partners to enhance diverse supplier networks, workforce development, education, and economic development. It will also collaborate with local and state governments to address infrastructure needs.
