CAC 40 Declines After Trump Assassination Attempt

French stock markets experienced a downturn on Monday following an attempt on the life of former U.S. President Donald Trump, creating further instability in an already chaotic presidential campaign.

Trump, in a statement on his social media platform, commented: "In this moment, it is more important than ever that we stand united, and show our true character as Americans, remaining strong and determined, and not allowing evil to win."

President Biden, in a prime-time address, called on the public to recommit to civil debate.

The benchmark CAC 40 index fell by 27 points, or 0.4%, to settle at 7,697, following a 1.3% gain on Friday.

Luxury goods companies with heavy exposure to China saw significant declines. LVMH dropped by 2.2%, Hermes International declined by 1.3%, and Kering fell by 4%, after reports indicated China's economy grew at a much slower pace than anticipated in the second quarter.

Airbus saw a slight uptick, while Thales rose by 1.1% following news that both companies are considering a merger of their space activities, potentially consolidating Airbus Defence & Space and Thales Alenia Space.
