Intel To Make Custom AI Chip For Amazon Web Services

Intel Corporation (INTC) and Amazon Web Services, Inc. (AWS), a subsidiary of Amazon.com (AMZN), have announced a significant co-investment in custom chip design. This extensive multi-year, multi-billion-dollar framework encompasses both products and wafers from Intel.

As part of this expanded collaboration, Intel will manufacture an AI fabric chip for AWS using Intel 18A, its most advanced process node. Additionally, Intel will develop a custom Xeon 6 chip on Intel 3, furthering the existing partnership under which Intel produces Xeon Scalable processors for AWS.

Both Intel and AWS are reinforcing their commitment to enhancing semiconductor manufacturing in the U.S., as well as fostering a dynamic AI ecosystem in Ohio.

Intel has reiterated its dedication to the New Albany area, highlighting its plans to construct cutting-edge semiconductor manufacturing facilities. AWS plans to invest $7.8 billion to expand its data center operations in Central Ohio, adding to the $10.3 billion it has invested in the state since 2015.

Moreover, Intel and AWS plan to explore the potential for additional designs to be produced by Intel based on Intel 18A and future process nodes, including Intel 18AP and Intel 14A, which are expected to be developed at Intel's Ohio facilities. There is also a possibility for existing Intel designs to migrate to these platforms.

In a separate announcement, Intel stated that the Biden-Harris Administration has granted the company up to $3 billion in direct funding under the CHIPS and Science Act for the Secure Enclave program, aimed at bolstering the trusted manufacturing of advanced semiconductors for the U.S. government.

This announcement underscores the ongoing progress of Intel Foundry, which encompasses all essential components for designing and manufacturing state-of-the-art chips.

Intel Foundry is on pace to achieve unprecedented innovation milestones, with its most advanced technology, Intel 18A, slated for production in 2025. The company continues to make significant strides in semiconductor manufacturing and research and development across its facilities in Arizona, New Mexico, Ohio, and Oregon.
