Japan's consumer sentiment saw a modest uptick in September, reaching its highest level in five months, according to data released by the Cabinet Office on Wednesday.
The seasonally adjusted consumer confidence index edged up to 36.9 in September, slightly above August's steady score of 36.7. This was slightly below economists' expectations, who had projected a rise to 37.1.
The survey, conducted on September 15, encompassed 8,400 households.
Breaking down the index, the employment component increased by 0.8 points, reaching 42.2. The sub-index for income growth also improved, climbing to 40.1 from the previous month's 39.7.
The index measuring the willingness to purchase durable consumer goods saw a slight increase to 31.0 from 30.9. However, the overall livelihood index experienced a small decline, falling to 34.4 from 34.7.
