T2 Biosystems To Sell Its FDA-Cleared Blood Diagnostics For Detection Of Sepsis-Causing Pathogens

T2 Biosystems, Inc. (TTOO) announced on Monday that it has entered into a multi-year exclusive distribution agreement in the United States with Cardinal Health (CAH). This partnership will involve the sale of T2 Biosystems' FDA-approved direct-from-blood diagnostic tools, including the T2Dx Instrument, T2Bacteria Panel, and T2Candida Panel, designed for the swift identification of pathogens that cause sepsis.

"We are excited to establish this distribution agreement with Cardinal Health," expressed John Sperzel, Chairman and CEO of T2 Biosystems. "This partnership positions them as the exclusive distributor of our FDA-approved, culture-independent diagnostics in the U.S. This will significantly enhance our presence among hospitals eager to integrate such advanced diagnostics to improve sepsis clinical care."

Sperzel further noted, "We anticipate that this collaboration will substantially broaden our reach within the U.S. hospital sector. Cardinal Health possesses an extensive commercial and distribution network, which includes specialists in capital equipment sales, facilitating the promotion of the T2Dx Instrument."

Despite the prevalent use of blood culture-based diagnostics for identifying sepsis-causing pathogens and determining antibiotic susceptibility, sepsis continues to be the foremost cause of mortality in U.S. hospitals, resulting in approximately 350,000 deaths annually. Additionally, it is the most significant expense in U.S. hospitalization, burdening the healthcare system with an estimated annual cost of $62 billion.

Furthermore, sepsis leads to the highest rate of 30-day hospital readmissions in the U.S., with 19% of survivors re-admitted within 30 days and 40% within 90 days, highlighting the urgent need for advanced sepsis detection technologies.
