UK stocks experienced slight gains on Wednesday following reports that China's finance ministry is set to hold a press conference on Saturday. The conference aims to outline strategies for enhancing countercyclical fiscal policy adjustments and supporting economic growth.
The FTSE 100 index rose by 29 points, or 0.4%, reaching 8,220, after experiencing a 1.4% decline on Tuesday.
Among the gainers, Mondi, a leading packaging and paper company, saw a 3.3% increase in its stock price following its agreement to acquire Schumacher Packaging's Western European assets for an enterprise value of 634 million euros.
CMC Markets also enjoyed a surge of nearly 5%. The company, known for its online financial trading services and B2B institutional solutions, anticipates a profit before tax for the first half of the fiscal year, marking a rebound from the previous year's loss due to increased operating income.
Conversely, Rio Tinto's shares fell by 0.5%. The mining conglomerate announced a definitive agreement to acquire Arcadium in an all-cash transaction valued at $5.85 per share, which appraises Arcadium's share capital at approximately $6.7 billion.
