Honda is initiating a recall for approximately 1.7 million Honda and Acura vehicles in the United States due to concerns over a potentially defective steering gearbox component, which could pose a safety hazard.
"American Honda is issuing this recall to urge owners of the affected vehicles to promptly bring their cars to an authorized dealer for repairs once they receive notification," the company announced on Wednesday.
The recall affects certain models, including the 2023-2025 Acura Integra, Civic Type R, CR-V Hybrid, CR-V, HR-V, along with the 2022-2025 Civic, Civic Hatchback, 2024-2025 Acura Integra Type S, 2025 CR-V Fuel Cell EV, Civic Hybrid, and Civic Hatchback Hybrid vehicles.
The issue lies within the steering gearbox assembly, which may have been manufactured incorrectly, potentially leading to excessive internal friction and making it difficult to steer the vehicle.
To resolve this issue, dealers will replace the worm gear spring and either redistribute existing grease or add new grease as required, at no cost to the vehicle owners. Notifications to owners are anticipated to be sent out by November 18, 2024.
