Swiss Market Ends On Bright Note

The Swiss stock market concluded Monday on a positive trajectory, with equities maintaining early momentum throughout the session. Investors balanced the analysis of the latest producer price inflation figures with anticipation of the European Central Bank's forthcoming monetary policy decision.

The Swiss Market Index (SMI) advanced by 105.04 points, or 0.86%, closing at 12,259.23. It fluctuated between an intraday low of 12,176.38 and a high of 12,266.58.

Notable performances included VAT Group, which rose by just over 3%, and Lonza Group, which saw an almost 3% increase. Logitech International appreciated by 2.62%, and UBS Group concluded with a gain of 2.05%.

Givaudan experienced a 1.67% uptick, with Swiss Re, ABB, and Sandoz Group advancing between 1.3% and 1.5%. Other gainers included SGS, Partners Group, Holcim, Kuehne + Nagel, Sonova, Alcon, and Novartis, each posting gains between 0.8% and 1.2%.

Sika, Swiss Life Holding, Swisscom, Schindler Ps, Julius Baer, Straumann Holding, Zurich Insurance Group, and Geberit also finished the day with solid improvements.

Conversely, Swatch Group faced a nearly 2.5% decline. SIG Group decreased by 0.93%, while Richemont slipped by 0.42%.

Shares in Bossard plummeted by over 8% following an annual dip in third-quarter net sales, which fell to 240.4 million francs from the previous 249.8 million francs. The company projects subdued sales figures for the coming quarter as well.

According to the Federal Statistical Office, Switzerland's producer and import prices witnessed a year-on-year decline of 1.3% in September, accelerating from August's 1.2% drop. This downward trend has persisted since May 2023. Specifically, the producer price index decreased by 0.2% annually, while import prices fell by 3.5%.

On a month-over-month basis, September saw a slight decrease of 0.1% in producer and import prices, contrasting with a 0.2% increase in August. This monthly reduction was primarily attributed to lower costs for mineral oil products.
